Dirty Design

The French Tourist Office has changed its brandnew logo already after the introduction in 2008. The new logo got a lot of criticism because of the way the letters formed Marianne's breasts (Marianne has been the national symbol since the revolution).

I bet most of the complaints didn't even come from the french population. Probably countries with a less tolerant culture did the complaining. So all that is left is a dull logo, stripped from fun, originality and romance.

Hey.. I had seen our new "tourist" logo and hadn't even realized about the breast thing... You might be right about the analysis... Which reminds me of a funny incident when I was a exchange teacher over in the States. I had a 100 franc banknote circulating among the students to have look at "French" money and got very negative comments from some of the (female, I must admit...) students. "A bare breasted woman on the note!!!" Well, true, there was a painting by Delacroix on the note, with "Liberty leading the People" very bare breasted indeed. And there I was, being accused of indecency by prudish girls... Oh well...
Cheers!

It's so funny and at the same time so sad to see how different cultures handle nudity in a different way. I love the way we dutch handle nudity in a down to earth and liberal way. Art is art, nudity is part of our culture and pornography is banned from tv, exactly the way I like it.

No doubt it was the US. I live in such a backwards country!

I didn't even see the "breasts" in the first logo.

It seems the religious right always has their minds in the gutter.
